BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
4 ATTITUDE OP THE BAPTIST CHURCH. The Rev. Canon Garland, who is conducting a lecturing campaign, under the auspices of the New Zealand Bible-in-Schools League, addressed a meeting in the Vivian Street Baptist Church last evening. Mr, A. Hoby presided. Canon Garland was listened to with deep attention, a number of questions Muff asked nt the close. After traversing iliegeneral question of the Biblc-in-schools movement, Canon Garland said that ho'was anxious' that Baptists should be well acquainted with tho position as it roiu'ctned' their church, and particularly that they should renliso that the Baptist Church in Australia was absolutely unanimous in support of tho prineiplo of Bible 10-fcns in State, schools. Tho Rev. S. Icarco Carey, a former eminent Baptist minister nf Melbourne, and tho Rev. Frederick Spurr, tho leading Baptist minister in Australia at tho present time, were amongst the strongest advocates of the principle. In South Australia tho Rev. A. Metters, of tho Baptist Church, was the organising secretary and leader of the Biblc-in-scliools movement in that State. In' Queensland, one of the four founders of the movement was the late Rev. Wm. 'Whale, a Baptist minister. Amongst those present at tho public farewell, which was 'accorded tho speaker when he was leaving for New Zealand, was (with representative ministers of other churches) tho Rev, R. Barnctt, president of the Baptist Union of Queensland, and vice-president of the Bible-in-Schools League, who testified to the union's support, and tendered his best wishes for the success of the campaign in New Zealand. This afternoon at.') o'clock Canon Garland will address a women's meeting at St. John's Presbyterian Church.
