It was fine overhead for the Dannevirko steeplechase meeting, but a lot of rain had fallen previously,, making the gcing fairly heavy. A much bigger crowd turned out than, was tho case ot the same meeting last year. The sum put through the totalisator could have been augmented considerably had better facilities been afforded the speculating public. As it was large suras were shut out in every raco. However, patrons are promised a big improvement by Cup time, ond now' that the club has been able to secure the property outright, it is the.'intention to go in for alterations on a large scale. These alterations will ineludo tho remodelling of the whole concern. Passengers who relied upon the special train from Palmerston North to convey them to the course were solely <iifappointed, for the load on the train proved too much for the engine provided, and after struggling valiantly up one of the rises, it suddenly stopped and had to run back half a mile or so and get another start. This delay meont 'that tho course was reached too late for the first race. This is a matter that the club might advantageously concern itself with. It means a lot of revenue when a big crowd, such as was in the train in question, misses a race. But to tho racing! The first event was the Hack Hurdles, in which Fionacre was prominent for about half the distance, when Bravest took charge from Master Stead, and won very comfortably. Golden Loop ran badly, ond so did Strnthmoira, who seemed to be shirking his fences, and required c reminder from his rider at several of the jumps. The winner had failed badly in a schooling gallop with Golden Loop prior to the Mnrton meeting, but before coming to Dannevirke he went well in a sevenfurlong gallop on the flat, and his trainer was very confident that, he would win. An accident occurred in the L'rniilarna Hack Handicap. AVlion rounding the home turn, Xsakau crossed his legs and cnine down, giving his rider ((.,'. Hollo) a 'bod shaking. Stellaris, who was close l>ohiud him, also came down over him, but Tricklebi'.nl; was unhurt. Pot Luck led down tho back and across the bottom, but at the straight entrance the. field hod collared him. Manakau wan r.lie first to as?ert bim.=elf, but Sam Pan, who finished well in the mudj boat him comfortably. Kind's f.atijL
ourito began badly, but finished up well, and got third money, just ahead of l)i----avolo. The last-named looked big and will be the better for racing. Ngakau was greatly fancied by his trainer as he had galloped well before leaving Hastings. The Handicap provided the best finish of tho day, and was a pretty race throughout. From a good start, Kilosteri took charge, with Blend and Brown Trout next. At tho six furlongs Koutine displaced Brown Trout, and the field was whipped by Klfish and Ariom. Across the bottom tho positions were unchanged, but as the straight was made, Brown Trout and Otahu joined the leaders. The last-named appeared to have file race over, but Cork- came very fast on the outside, and in a grand finish Otahu beat him by a head, with Brown Trout, Blend, and Routine all in line. Ariom was a long way back in last position. 'X hero were six -runners in the Dannevirke Steeplechase, and only three of them completed the couTse. Glenmore was a hot favourite, but the fast pace and Lis big weight stopped him, and over the last circuit, Don Carlos, who was punching his fences very hard, went away and left the favourite standing. The winner's performance was a good one, as he was left badly nt the start, and gave the field a big break. Tyrannic and Puketotara made the early pace, but a mile from home the Foxton horse dropped back, and Don Carlos joined Tyrannic in front. The sod wall, however, was too much for the lastnamed, who came down, as did Highden and Pukctotara. Jlorihiko also jumped this fence badly, and on the first, circuit had lost a lot of ground. Glenmore struggled on gamely under his big weight, but the winner beat him pointless. None ol the riders who fell were injured. A big field of 22 runners started in the Trial Stakes. Papamarama, who hails from Awapuni, and Panthea were ' the best backed. A gos»4 start was effected, Runaway Girl, in the centre, being quickest to find her feet. There was a lot of chopping\and changing, and the field was quickly disorganised. Runaway Girl entered the straight with a big lead, but Moonbria—a half-brother to Ivoctuiform— put in a sensational run, and was only a neek behind at. the finish. Panthea was third, with the remainder strung out. Jtoonbria was undoubtedly unlucky rot to win. He is a big well-grown Lay c> It, but is far from ready, and each raco from now on may be depended on to improve him. Should he start in the .Maiden Race at 'Wnnganui, the'race between hm and Postillion should be brimful of interest. Panthea showed a lot of pace at the finish, after being slow to find her feet. Divinia, whose manners nt the barrier have not improved, also showed pace, but could not go on at' the finish. "With, some 17 runners starting in the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, it was only to bo expected that there would be numerous falls. Longboat set off at a fast pace, and led the big field down tho back. Tho second fence of the - doublo proved fatal to Gondolier, and, af the sod wall, Bonny Jean tipped over. Longboat had a three lengths lead passing the stand, but he was chancing his fence?) and ninny people, thought the eod wall would bring him down. This proved to be correct, and he broke his back. Meanwhile several of tho others had run off, and "Wheturangi was now in charge from The Ranter and Kelp, with the others trailing hopelessly in the' rear. "Wheturangi jumped the remaining fences safely, and won comfortably from Kelp, who was a. neck in front of The Ranter. Very few of the others completed the course. A. Julian, rider of Longboat, had his collar-bone fractured, and VV. Adams (Gondolier) had his thigh broken, and also sustained n fractured collar-bone. Kelp was unlucky, and, had he not jumped on top of the prostrate Longboat (causing him to lose many lengths) he might havo defeated Wheturangi. The field was far from a strong one, and the majority of tho runners presented a most ungainly appearance. Coolbeggan was a very hot favourite in the Otangi Handicap, with Royal Marine next in demand, At the start the favourito and Muleteer led, with Elevator and Royal Marine whipping the field. Across the bottom Lord Reuown, who had been bandy to the leaders, moved up, and, at the- straight entrance, he took charge. Coolbeggan'fell back quickly, but Muleteer stuck on well. Royal Marine and lilevator finished *on under their light imposts, and got, second and third, a couplo of lengths separating them from Lord Renown, who won comfortably.. Kina was the best-backed in the big field which contested the Hack Welter. After, a lot of bother at the barrier,' caused by Easy, and Kina refusing to line up, the tapes went up to a moderately good start, with Easy the first to become prominent. Kina soon cut her down, and, across the bottom, he led from Moondine and Royal Maid. Next St. Helena, who had got off badly, nislied vp to the leaders, but the effort was too much, and he could not sustain it. Royal Maid fell back in the straight and Moondine ta.cklcd Kina, but could make no. impression on the leader, who won nicely. Queen of Scots was third, and St. Helena fourth. The winner looked well, and evidently thrives on a light preparation. He was paying a big prico up till nearly closing time, but then a. rush set in for him, and he finished up the absolute favourite. DEATH OF A TROTTING STALLION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
