The carrying capacity of the American cables is 325 million' words yearly, but only 25 million words are sent over them. The Australian cables could do sevenfold, sending 50 million words instead of the present eight millions. Vested interests alone stood in the way of penny-a-wonl telegrams throughout the world.

When the Port Darwin wireless station is completod, thereby linking Australia with tho Empire wireless system, tho Government intends charging two shillings a word for wireless messages to England, as against the cable charge of 3s. a word.
