LIBRARY EXTENSIONS.

A KILBIRNIE REQUEST.

A deputation representing the Kilbirnie Ratepayers' Association wnited upon the Libraries' Committee of the City Council yesterday afternoon for tho purpose of urging the claims of their district to a branch library. Mr. J. J. Clarke, the principal speaker, said that a large number of Kilbirnic residents were subscribers either of tl\e Central or tlio JScwlown Libraries, and on account of the distance, it was a matter of inconvenience, ond— since the car fares went up—considerable expense for the Kilbirnie people to change their books regularly. Brooklyn had a branch library, with a resident attendant, but tlio Kilbirnie people did not propns* to ask the council to go that far. ■ All that was suggested was that accommodation might be found for the Kilbirnie library in the now dressing shod wb>h the corporation proposed to erect at the recreation ground. Ho assured tins cornmil toe that, although libraries wero/not, strictly speaking, paying propositions, the Kilbirnie library, if established,' would nay as well as a public library could pay. He hiinsolf would guarantee twelve sv.blscribors, and other members of the asso'ciation would also mako themselves responsible for the complement of subscribers. Mr. A. A. George and Mr. H. Andrevartha also spoke. Replying to the deputation, the Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren) said that the whole question of the distribution of library books to the outlying districts required consideration, in the opinion of the chief librarian (Mr. H. Bailiio). who supported tlio application of tlio Kilbirnie ratepayers. The difficulty was that if tho Kilbirnio claim (which w.is the strongest) were approved, other claims would come in from other districts. 4 The cconnlittpo would give tho matter its earnest consideration and report to the council.. The deputation thanked his Worship, and withdrew. '
