BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
CANON GARLAND'S MEETINGS. The Rev. Canon Garland, of Queensland, who is at present in New Zealand under engagement with the Bible iu .Schools League, opened his campaign in furtherance of tho movement for the introduction ol llible lessons in State schools, with an address at St. Peter's Church <m bunduy last. In referring to the position in tho State schools of tho Dominion he pointed out that at present the parent who <iid not wish Jiis child taught the Bible had his wish respected j the parents (and vhoy are a large majority) who did wish their children to bo so tnught were nol now allowed (o havo it; the league platform respected the wish of all parents, li tho history of China and itspTcseut life was being taught to tho children, tho teacher might bo fully into the religion and books of Buddhism or Confucianism, and it would be necessary to do eo to understand Chinese life und character, but at present when tho character and history i i'V fe n of t lle , Itritish »'«» being taught tho teacher was forbidden to make any reierence to tho supremo factor, religion and the Bible.. Tho league hoped l<, alter this. Again, teachers wore encouraged to (each the children about tie lives, oi.great men living and departed, but Hit life of tho greatest, Jesus Christ, on whose mo, example, and teaching tho others were able to becomo great, must under 110 circumstances bo mentioned. This, too, the loaguo proposed to alter. Addresses on similar lines were given 'at the Men's Brotherhood on Sunday afternoon, and at the Salvation Army Citadel last evening.
