THE PUBLIC SERVICE BILL.
OBJECTIONS FROM DUNEDIN. (By Telegraph.-Pro.tß A»jootatlo»J Dunedin, September 9. At a meeting of tho Post and Telegraph staff to-night, f-he Public Service Bill was considered, and it was decided to make an emphatic protest against tho proposal to bring tho Post and Telegraph Department under tho provisions of the Bill; on tho ground (1) that tho service as a whole is satisfied with tho present classification, which, if properly administered l would eliminate political patronago and Departmental favouritism; (2) that the nature of tho work and hours of duty in this Department are entirely foreign to any other Department of the Civil Service. The meeting urged that evidence l>o taken bjl a committee of the House of Kepresentativs from representative of the various branches of the Post and Telegraph Officers , ' Association. It is contended that the powers conferred on the commissioner in the matter of promotion are not well enough defined, and that the provision for one Appeal Board representative of the whole of the Department practically means the disfranchisenient of ouo branch of the service.
