.PURCHASES IN SCOTLAND,
Further purchases of thoroughbred Clydesdale blood in Scotland for New Zealand are reported as having been made recently. Mr. James Pick'cn, Kircudbright, has consigned to Messrs. Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Dunedin, two good Clydesdales selected by Mr. Robert Allen, Howell, Kircudbright. One of them, Momentum (16908), was bred by the Earl of Stair, Balkeir House Farm, Lochinch, Castlv Kennedy, and is by the Cawdor Cup champion Memento (13100) out of Nell II of Lochinch (22818), by the stal■lion Mains of Aires (10379). His granddam is Nell of Lochinch (4138), by Lord Lyon (-189). Momentum is a two-year-old, described as being of outstanding merit, with lots of size, first-rato legs and feet. The other horse is also a two-year-old named Burgie Lad (16907), bred by Mr. .Tohn Wallace, Hayclose, Calthwaito, Carlisle. He v/tis got by Baron of Burgie (13315), and'is out of Daisy of Hayclose (1G113), by Lord Lothian (5998), while his grand-dam Lady (13315) is by. the Cajrdor Cup champion Prince of Carruchan'(Blal). Burgie Lad is said to be a typical Clydesdale of the bsst sort, with plenty of flat, flinty bone, nice sloping pasterns, good wide, open feet, and an all-round straight mover. , , The sales which have been effected on behalf of New Zealand stud-owners are:— To Mr. J. A. Dunbar, of Studholme Junction, a well-bred two-year-old colt, Fyvie Count (16599). has been sold by Messrs. A. and W. Montgomery, Netherhall and Banks, Kircudbright.- He is by the champion Hiawatha out of Daisy Bell (26227), by the Highland and Agricultural Society champion Everlasting (11331); while his grand-dam is Eveline (9501) by Garnet Cross' (1662). He is reported to have a grand well-set framo and tbo best of quarters, with a capital depth of rib, carried'upon the best of lees. Messrs. Montgomory have sold to Mr. William Dunbar, of. Waimate, South Canterbury, n two-year-old colt called Dalinoro (16512), bred by Mr. Andrew Mackenzie, of Dalmore, Aluess, Eoss-shire. The sire of this young horse is the champion Marcellus (11110), and bis dam is Albertina (17927), by tho Highland and Agricultural' Society prize horse, Prmco Albert of Rosehaugh (9357). Further sales for New Zealand wero also talked about, but details were not available when tho mail left.
The proprie>ors of the flaxmill at Cameron's, in the Hokitikn district, have decided to resume operations. The preliminary arrangements are now in progress, and'it will not be long before the buzz ef tho scutcher is again heard in tho land, It is several years since the flax in the locality wns cut. and in tho interim .tho plants'hnvo regained their usual luxuriant growth, so that a large quantity of tho green article is now ayailablo within a short distance of tho niill.
An agricultural school for tcachoTs will open in Mastorton this week. Tho school, which will be in charge of Mr. Cuinming/agrictiltural instructor to tho Wellington Education Board, will last for a fortnight. A large number of visiting teachers will be present.
