WATER AND DRAINAGE.
POSITION OP MIRAMAR'S PROJECTS. Interesting reference was mado at last night's meeting of the Mirainar Borough Council to tho position. of tho water supply and drainago schemes of tho borough. . Tho Mayor (Mr. H. M'Leod) introduced tho matter. He said that the question of water supply and soworago had reached an important stage. For some time tho council hud been eliciting information regarding tho progress of the work. Generally speaking, ho added, the water supply undertaking had come out fairly well as to tho lower levels. The drainage matter was in a different position. From the engineer's report the council found that out of tho .£25,000 loan there had been .£17,000 expended, against commitments there was .£3OOO, .£I6OO was due to power supply, which totalled .£21,800. Tho estimated cost of the completion of tho schomo at present would be .£9700. The council, the Mayor said, had gone into the matter in committee, and a series of resolutions had been drawn up. This he would present to the council for adoption or rejection. It would bo a question of policy as to how far tho council would go in completing tho whole scheme. Tho Mayor then moved:— ' 1. That the completion of the full original scheme bo deferred meantime. 2. That the drainago work at present bo confined to making useful work already done, including the connection 'of tho sewers with the city sewer. 3. That the expenditure on the various districts be temporarily allotted pro rata, according to the original scheme. ■f. That an estimate of tho cost of works already done be obtained (») from the power limine to Seatoun nnd IvaraVa Bay, and fb) from the nower house to Mirainar North. 5. That the Drainage Committee be instructed to reoort on the advisability of carrying out the balance of the work by eontrant. C. Thnt Hie committee be empowered to reduce the 'faff on drniniur» works or to nioko use of the general staff on drainage. 7. That the committee be authorised to take ill" necessary steps to raise 10 per cent, additional on the water supply and drainage loans. The resolutions were all agreed to, and respecting resolution 6, it was subsenuently resolved to find work, if possible, for married men.
