CIVIC AFFAIRS.

WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Wellington City Council was held last evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr. ]). M'Laren), and Councillors F. Cohen G. Shirtcliffc, R. Tho necessary stops ivero. authorised to be taken to nrrXige for the repayment in 1914 of .£25,000 of tho city improvement loan of .CIOO.OOO. The Mayor explained that this resolution was merely by way of a formal reminder to the Sinking Fund Commissioners. It was resolved, on the recommendation of the Finance Committee, to request the Government to repeal Section 23 of tho Local Bodies' Loans Amendment Act, 1908 (which provides for the future investment of sinking funds for loans with the Public Trustee), and that in order to meet certain difficulties of investment of small sums by bodies of. sinking fund commissioners controlling sinking funds, such bodies, be authorised to take up approved contributory mortgages and approved contributory investments. This decision is pursuant to a resolution adopted by the Tecent Municipal Conference. The request of tho Karori Borough Council that tlie concession tickets formerly in use between the Botajiicol Gardens and Kclburne Avenue bo re-issued, wa.s not acceded to. A permit was granted for the erection, of a picture theatre at the corner of Manners and Willis Streets. Permission was granted to Mr. J. Bonnie for tho erection of a tea kiosk and lull at Oriental Bay, with a balcony extending over Gft. of the Town Belt (Quarry Reserve) subject to certain conditions. Mr. A. L. Wilson was appointed auctioneer of the D.I.C. leases, to be sold on September' 27 next. The following tenders were accepted:— Supplv of prepayment meters, H. S. King: steel tvres, S" Brown, Ltd.; waiting-shed (Post Office Square), Sanders Brothers.
