POSITION AT PRESENT. (By TelesraDli.—Special OorresDonaent.) Waihl, September 5. Tho Waihi engine-drivers to-day reccived a reply to their appeal to the I'rimo Minister for further protection. The reply was to tho effect that it would receive, the immediate attention of the Government. This has reassured the men both at Waihi and Waikino. The extra police force drafted in has had a salutary effect. Additional constables arrived from Wellington to-day, but, nevertheless, the engine-drivers here, and the men workiug at Waikino, are daily and hourly subjected to espionage. . [The recent displays by the strikers in Waihi have alarmed a largo bodtf of residents, and they have- appealed to the Government for additional police protection. Apparently tho Government have viewed the situation with attention, for tho police forco at Waihi and at Waikino is beinjj considerably strengthened. Ten polico constables left Wellington on Wednesday, and arrived in Waihi kit evening. Another detachment left yesterday morning, and a third will leave Wellington to-day.
