WELLINGTON ZOO.
THE PROPOSAL TO CHARGE FOB ADMISSION. - ( "No child ought t"' bo charged for being allowed to see such an 'exhibition of cruelty." This was a statement made by Councillor Tregear at last night's meeting of the City Council. He was referring to the Zoo, where he said tho mortality among the animals and birds was heavy. Ho was not objecting to tho administration, but declared that tho place was not suitable for the purpose. The discussion arose over a suggestion by Councillor Hindmarsh, who has charge of the Wellington City Reserves Empowering Bill now before Parliament, and who explained that there was- organised opposition to the proposal to oliarge admission to the Zoo for all persons over tho age of seven years. He thought if the age were not increased the proposal might imperil the whole Bill. After n good deal of discussion, tho Mayor proposed that tho ago should bo increased to 14 years. An Amendment by Councillor Fuller that the age should bo increased to 21 years was lost. In reply to Councillor Trcgcar's statement as to the mortality among the animals, tho Mayor said that from his own personal inquiries ho could state that there was practically nothing in it.
