INTERPROVINCIAL. OTAQO BEATS TAR ANA KI. (Bj Telegraph.—Press Association.) Hawera, September i. Otago and Tnranaki played on a wet ground, and with a greasy ball, and Otago, playing a fine game, beat Taranaki by 18 points to 11. A feature of the play was tho fino fleldiDg, taking, and kicking of the Otago backs, and the great placekicking of Cockroft (Otago) and Stohr (Taranaki). Otago had mostly tho best of tho play. Their forwards were too good, while tho line-kicking of the backs u-as also good. l Taranaki .kicked off against the wind, Otago backs returning well. Some loose play occurred, and then Brown secured a mark from which Stohr (kicking from near half-way) sent over a magnificent goal. Taranaki, 3—o, The Otago forwards followed up the kick-out, and gavo Taranaki a good time defending, whilo the Otago backs drovo back Taranaki's coun-ter-attacks by splendid line kicking. Then Watson marked, and Cockroft goaled, mid applause. The kick made the score level—three all. Taranaki then tcok a hand at attacking, the Otago backs defending well. From a loose rush, Cuthill secured, and dashed through his men, and, after a brilliant run, got over. Otago then attacked strongly, and, from a mark by Dryden, Cockroft kicked another fino goal. Otngo, 9—3. Eokhold secured from tho kick out, and, with a good dash, found the lino well down. From a penalty near midfield Cockroft gonled. Otago, 12—3. Before half-time Sheohan scored again. Otago, 15-3. In the second spell it was expected that Taranaki would make up its leowuy with the wind, but Otago again attacked, and boat the homo forwards badly, Riving Taranaki an anxious time. Eventually Taranaki broke away. Stohr kicked high, and the forwards followed up well, and worked -play to the Otago quarters. They seemed, however, likely to lose the ,score, but, just then, S. Cameron dived over tho line, and scored in a good position. Stohr made no mistake. Otago, 15—8. Immediately after resuming Otago got on some of tho prettiest passing rushes seen during the game, pafsing tho ball through tho hands of all tho backs. A pood de- ' fenco saved Otago several times when the backs were within an aco of scoring. Then tho forwards got on a rush, and a frco kick was awarded against Taranaki from half-way. «■ Cockroft kicked a brilliant goal—a fine effort, which was much appreciated by tho spectators. Otago, 18— 8. Spurred on by this reverse, Taranaki made play lively, and off-sido play by Otago gave Stohr a chance to put on a fine goal. Otago, 18—11. From this out piny was fast, but Taranaki were unable, despite splendid attempts, to scoro further. The game resulted ns above. Mr. Kivell was referee.
