NOTES OX THE RACING.
(By Telesraph.-Special Correspondent.) Marlon, 'September i. There was a record crowd nt Marton to-day, and the club must hare shown a credit over the day's transactions. The Tain lield off, but a. heavy wind blew down the course. The racinEf was full of surprises, and backers of the favourites experienced a bad day. Nescofc jarred himself badly at Biccnrton, and was not well enough to nice in (he hurdles to-day. In his absence, the public made Golden Loop the first choice; Tho favourite was out in front for a mile, but after that his rider was at him. and ov<ir the last fence Strathmoira and Fashion Plate, wh<s had been in behind, headed him. Fashion Plate easily held his own, and won nicely, with Golden Loop well clear of the others. Heyhoy foil at the last fence. Fionacro ran off at the first, and after jumping .t steeplechase fence ho pulled np in tho tree.'. Eighteen runners faced tho barrier in the Maiden Plate. • Postillion, who looked hardly ready, was in pronounced demand on • the tetalisfttor. He started on tho fence, and had every ohanCe. but Condi-tie-n beat him-at the finish. Tho big field stood perfectly still at the barrier, and went off well. Postillion stumbled slightlv, but he soon recovered, and raced to ■the front. Down the back ha was joined by St. Serf, and the pair then drew out from the field. A eood tussle in the straight saw St. Serf prevail by a good neck. Whimper was a long way back. «nd the. field was strung out for over a furlong.
Crown Pearl. Stvx, and Altcar were backed in that order in the Railway Handicap. The Oblipido more, Pinwni, as usual gave trouble at the barrier, hicHns cut. Nt everything. Styx, in particular, suffered, and .received a nasty cut on mic of his hind lei;s. Crown Tearl and tho rest of the field jumped out well, but tho favourite was soon sent back with a bod bump, and did not regain lii? W-i----tion. Mount Victoria led into the Ftraiffht, but then Piriwai dashed up and won by several lengths.- Altcar finished well, and £ct second money by a length from Mount Victoria. Tho favourite was fourth.
Backers.went solidly for Gondolier in the. Bnftt Club Cup. but lie was early in trouble, and finished out of e. nlace.. His
rider took him to the front, and made a lot of use of him. This probably helped to bring about his defeat. A. Gordon, on Wheturangi, rode a splendidly-judged race, I and so did L. Bull on Riro Atu. Outside tills) pair the others had no chance. Kua, gavo a good exhibition of jumping, but he had no chance with Wheturangi, Who had the too of anything in tho race. Tho jumping throughout was good. Kinus Salubrious, and Sagamore parted company With their ridors, nono of whom, however, were hurt. Deploy and Uhlnndo wero the only defections'from the Alarton Handicap. Ivijraiu, tho favourite, looked really well, as did The Hover. Jn the preliminaries Sir Tristram Went along nicely, and gained many friends. At the .start Aloha jumped out clear of the field, aiid ted at a, smart pace from Monriform and Odessa. Down the back the last-named took charge, and led to the bottom of tho straight, whero The Hover and Kilraiil parsed him. Ngatimaru came very fast from the bottom, and, in the race to the post, lit smothered the leaders. Sir Tristram also finished well, and got second money. Kilrain and Odessa Wero just outside the placed horses. . _ ~, , . A surprise turned up in the Lleclrio Hack Handicap, which went, to Lady Louisa, a 41-vear-old mare by the Carbine horse Campfire. Lady Volga, who ran | in the colours of Mr. F. Preston, was first off, but was soon joined by Aratiatin, Mertoii, and King's Favourite, the leaders sweiit vorv wide at the turn, Lady Louisa" getting through on the fence. A great race up the straight resulted nl a two lengths victory for Lady Louisa, with Katua a head in front of Peggie. Lady Volga and several others weve in i a bunch just behind the placed horses. There was a mix up at tho start of tho flack Steeples, and Don Carlos did not leave the mark. Paoarnehi fell at the first fence, and Puketo.tnrn came down over him. There Bonnie Jean lost & lot of Mound, and was tailed off tho whole wav. Kelp, Rangitane, and Sagamore were the leading division for a mile, when Hakari took charge. At the fjvo furlong", Kelpmn past Hakari, and Rebel also moved lip. A bad jump spoilt the latlev's chances, and Kelp ran on alone, and won bv soveral lengths.' Eangitnne was six lengths in front of Tlebel, Sagamore and Bonnio Jean being the only others to finish. Hakari fell nt tho Hencoon, and broke his ndok. Master Laddo and Serenity were bracketed on the machine in the Hack 'Welter, and the'combination started as hot favourites, with 'five Native next in demand. St. Helena .was the first to show out, but Blend soon headed him, and led down the back and into the straight. Hero • Master Laddo ran up to bun, and toolbeggan came fast on the inside. Blend held his own in the run home, and won by a narrow margin.

THE ROVER CASE,
LESSEE DISQUALIFIED FOR TWO YEARS. (By TeleEraph—Press Association.! Christchurcli, September 4. The adjourned meeting of the stewards of the Canterbury Jockey Club to inquire into the facts surrounding the scratching of The Rover in the Grand National Htirdlo Race irna held to-day. The finding was as follows:—- , ■ "The stewards find that Tho Dover was entered and fully paid up for.the New Zealand Grand National Hurdle Knee, 1912. The horse was fit and well on the day of the race and was backed heavily by the public and was laid against in aii unwarrantable 'manner. Tho horse was scratched'at 11.45 on the day that, the Grand National Hurdle Race was to he run. by Mr. T. Had, acting on an undated authority signed by Mr. Wright, lessee of the horse. No notice or intimation wns received that the horse whs to bo scratched by either Price (the man in charge of the horse), or the secretary of the club. The lessee having raced the horse without success on the flat during the greater paTt of his lease on one vear, induced tho lessor, about June last, to waive the condition in the lease that the horse was not to bo raced over hurdles and then entered him for the Grand National Hurdles, and schooled and prepared him to run in it, and according to tho evidence of Trice, acting on instruction from Mr. Wright, the horse jumped over hurdles on the morning of the day the race was to bo run. On Hie running of the Rover in the Jumpers' Flat Race on the first day of the meeting, the horse seemed to have ail excellent, chance of winning the Grand National Hurdles. Questioned by the stewards as to whv The Rover was scratched for the race a't 11.45 on the day it was to be run, Mr. Wright (lessee), gave as lus reasons that he was afrnid of injuring the horse. He hoped to get a.■further lease of him from September 30. 1912. The reasons given for scratching The Rover, taken in conjunction with the stale of tho betling market, satisfied the steward- that Mr Wright, the lessee, was guilty of <ornipt practice within the meaning of the 'Rules of Racing in so scratching the horse. They disqualified him for a term of two years." . The stewards add: In coining to this I decision we recognise that if the belting ■ pubiio would-adhere to tho law by not betting with bookmakers the. ease would inil have.arisen, because.no bettini: would [ take place until the totaluator ODoaed,
