DISASTROUS FIRE.

A huge conflagration lias occurred at Santa Monica, a seaside resort 17 miles out of Los Angeles. The iiro started in a defective flue, in a eal'e. 'I'lio pleasure pier was destroyed, and also the chief buildings at Ocean I'ark and Venice. The loss ■ is put at .£500,000. Seven men were caught in the flames lit the end of the pier and leaped into the surf. Six were rescued and fhe seventh drowned. Thrilling rescues were made at the Hotel Decatur, where many occupants were cut off by the flames. ' Die firemen caved nine babies housed within a baby incubator on the pier. The Homau Catholics gathered at St. Clemen's Church and offered prayers. The wind shifted shortly afterwards, and the church was untouched by the fire, although the surrounding buildings were destroyed.
