THE NORSEWOOD CASE.
DECK CHARGED WITH MURDER. (By Tclofraph—Press Association.) Dannevirke, September i. Tho inquest concerning the death of Anuio Mary Heck, of Soulh Norscwcod, on Friday night last, was concluded to-day lit Oriiiondrjllo. Peter T.awson Beck, eon of deceased, stated tlmt his father had been a very heavy drinker for'years, and latterly had been netting much worse. When drunk (and. ho got roused) he got into such a stale that; ho did not know what he was doing. TIo had ill-treated his wife for vcars, when under the influenco of liquor. , j Constable M'Eeod, who arrested accused, said that Beck had wanted to shoot himself on Saturday morning. His statement regarding the fatality was that his wifo had been drunk, and had fallen down in the backward. He had tried to take her to her bed, but she was tco heavy. Ho, therefore, left her on the floor, and went to l>cd, and on waking he found his wife dead. Ho had left her on the floor, nnd he volunteered the statement Hint there were no marks on her. Afterwards, however, when told ef the marks, he said that she must have got them through falling on the wood-bin. Detective Butter gave similar evidence as to the statement made by Beck. The jury found that deceased had died on Friday night from cardiac syncope, caused from the effects of injuries received from violence inflicted on her. As tho husband was the only person _in the house it was considered that a prima iacio case existed against him. . Beck was subsequently charged in tho Magistrate's Court with having committed murder, and was remanded until Wednesday next. __^_____
