MASTERTON NOTES.

(From Our Special: Correspondent.) Masterton, .September 3. A considerable mortality -m breeding ewes is reported. from the outlymj districts. Tho cause is technically known as "protrusion," and is said to be the result of over-fatness. The Agricultural Department issued a pamphlet some years ago dealing with the subject, and advisins farmers how to handle she- which might bo suffering. This is said to be still in circulation.

The funeral of tho late Mr. J. H. Pauling takes place on Thursday afternoon. The fire brigade, fire police, pipe band, and local bodies are to be represented. Mr. John Payne, JX.P., bus givea a shield for competition anions? the schools of tits Dominion at the New Zealand Physical Culture Association's demonstrations. Tlie nest demonstration is to bo held in Jlasterton during the month of October.

There is a good deal of sickness in Jlasterton at the present time, quite a number of residents bein? hid aside with .influenza and other complaint l . The vacant seat on the Masterton Trust lands Trust, caused by tho death of Mr. J. H. Pauling, is likely to vigorously contested, ihe names of several probable candidates have already been mentioned. A meeting. of unionists convened by the laratahi Meat Workers' Union was held to-night and was addressed by Mr. B. MUae, who alleged that the aijr.eenient entered into by the comnany had not been respected Mid that certain officials of the union has been victimised. No resolution - was carried.

At special meetings of tho Borough Council and the Trust Lands Trust tonight, resolutions of.condolence with the family of the late Mr. J.-H. Pauline were earned in silence.
