RIVAL WIND JAMMERS.
-, A RACE ON THE COAST. (Bj Teleßrarh.-'Prcsj Association Gisborne, September 3. Although the wind jammer is fast disappearing on tho '. New Zealand const, there are yet numerous ports which tho steam-propelled trafficker cannot negotiate, aud the smaller craft of the fails plies its calling along the ooaet. The days of sailing records, tco, are not yet done. Something of the keenness of those trading on the const was illustrated to-day by the simultaneous arrival in the bay ot tho schooner Aw.inui and the ketch Coronation, each of 85 tons, and livals on the run from Mercury Buy. Each was loaded and ready to depart from that port, timber laden, on Sunday morning, ami wagers were made as to which vowel would cover tho distance in tho quicker space ot' time. The Coronation took advantage of a favourable iviml nt 10.30 a.m., and an hour later tho Kiils of the trim schooner Awir.mi were bellying out to tlw breeze. Westerly and occasional veering winds wore experienced, ami* both craft sped along in good time, Iwinj? in sight of one another most of the voyage. An exciting mil ensued to-day, and ended in both arriving in the loadstriid within minutes of each other, and tho vessels were towed to harbour port together. It was a case, they say, of first alongside til? wharf, and ns they were berthed simultaneously honours must bs counted even. The A.vnnui, however, claims the run ns she was later in leaving.
