FAMOUS CHIEF'S DEATH. (By Tcleeraph.— Special Correspondent.) Auckland, September 3. Thl Mayor and Councillors of Taurango, accompanied by Territorial officers in uniform, proceeded yesterday to Wharoroa (where tho romains of tho late Chief, Horl Ngatai, are lying in state) for tho mirjwso of paying their respects to the relatives. Tho visitors were received in tho Maori way, volleys being fired and war dances performed. It was announced that the interment will tako placo on Thursday afternoon at tho old military cemetery. Tho deceased chief fought against the Europeans at the Gato Vα. and To Ronga, but a. few months afterwards, took a _pmniincnt part in (he peace negotiations, (ho influence 'exerted by him being no small factor in bringing- about fnendly relations. Thereafter he took a great interest in Native affairs, and was appointed bv tho Government as an assessor of the Native Land Court, magisterial assercor, and licensing assessor. _ Iho Agatmuisis showed great faith in the deceased chief and on numerous occaeions, sent him to Wellington to represent many matters to the Government.
