THE RAROTONGAN TRADE.
GOING TO AUCKLAND. Mr. W. J. Thompson, who returned from a trip to the South Sea Islands, raised a rather important matter at the meeting of the council of the Chamber of Commerce ■' on Monday afternoon. Some years ago ho explained a service was established between Wellington and tho islands, but at Earotonga it had beca pointed out to him that the boats in that service only stopped there a few hours, and tho result was that tho wholo of the trade went to Auckland, as th'j boats on the. Auckland-Island service wore- not restricted to time. Ho had asked tho Island people why they did not give eoine of the trade to Wellington, and was informed that tlwy must deal with Auckland, as the Wellington eteaiuor, which ran to a strict time-table, could not be relied onl to receive or deliver Roods. It had been pointed out to Wellington rnerchants that tho new service was going to bo a big advantage to them, but that promise had not materialised. It was decided to approach the Union Company respecting tho matter.
