TRADE EXPANSION.
COST OF FINDING MARKETS. Three returns were laid before the House of Representatives yesterday, in accordance with the recommendation of the Public Accounts Committee. Ono shows that an expenditure of X 647 was incurred in promoting the sale of New Zealand produce on outside markets during the year ended March 31, 1912. Items are:— Purchase of samples, .£69; erecting trophy, New Zealand Court, Imperial Institute, ,£2O; ffeight, charges, etc., ,£l6; salary, Mr. P. E. Davies, Buenos Ayres, fqr cabling particulars of shipments of produce to. United Kingdom, £2l\; travelling expenses, Produce Commission?! , , JCI7; printing in -French and Gorman reports of International Refrigerating Conference, ,£26; subscriptions to sundry meat societies, etc., .£11; sundries, £3.- Expenses in connection with tho work of Mr. J. G. Gott - , Trade Representative, Canada, additional abovo —Travelling allowance, .£272; rail and steamer toes, .£47; clerical assistance, .£24; postage and cables, etc., ■£14; other expenses, including rent sample Tooms, etc., .£104—.£462; total expenditure, .£647. A second return gives details of the total expenditure incurred by the Dominion in respect to trade representation and oversea, agencies, Department of Agriculture, Industries ana Commerce, for the year ended March 31, 1912. Trade Representative. One officer was.employed last year (on tho West of Isorth America). Tho total expenditure during the year was as follows:-Salary, £150; travelling allowance, JE272; rail and steamer fares, .£47; clerical assistance, .£24; postages, cables, etc., £M; subscriptions to newspapers, £5; other expenses, including rent of sample room?, X 104: total, X 917. Oversea Agencies. Agencies are established at Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Vancouver. Of these tho agencies at Melbourne and Sydney are conducted by officers of the Government.
