llr. John Watson Stevenson, a member of the Lower Hutt Borough Council, passed away at his residence, Main. Street, on Sunday afternoon, Deceased, who was 50 years of age, was born at Belfast, Ireland, and had been a resident of Lower Hutt for the past nine years.•.Hβ was a prominent member of the local Masonic Order, and was secretary of the .Hutt Ratepayers' Association during.the existence of that body. He leaves a widow. The fuDeral took place yesterday afternoon. At the special meeting of the Butt Borough Council, held on Monday night, the following motion was moved by the Mayor:—"That this council expresses its deep sympathy with Mrs. Stevenson regarding the death of her husband." The mover said that the late Mr. Stevenson was a man of sterling character, and was everywhere highly respected. During tho latter years of his life he had devoted much time to tho borough, and had , always supported measures for the general benefit of the district. Mr. Bunny added that in Mr. Stevenson ho had lost a personal friend. Councillor Knight, who seconded the motion, endorsed what tho Mayor had said. Tho motion was carried in silence, members standing, and the council adjourned for half an hour as a mark of respect to the memory of their late colleague.
