iFr.im Our Eoecial Correspondents , .) i- ( OTAKI. A concert was held on Friday evening for the purpose of, raising funds to improvo the local domain by tree-planting. Despite a tol' day, and a heavy rainfall nt night,- the attendance was a large, andcertainly an enthusiastic, one. The programme was probably tjm' best yet submitted in the district, and included items by such performers as Miss Dorothy Blniichard and Jliss Pauline Brown, both capital elocutionists, Jliss Remington, tho well-known Levin violinist, Jliss Quill, Otaki's leading pianists, and Messrs.. D. V. liillicrap and Stanley Rcinkin, performers of note from Wellington, and Mr. Byron Brown, who was recently adjudged champion elocutionist at 'Napier. Tho items by tiro foregoing were warmly received. As a result of tho concert, sufficient funds were raised to plant the wholo of the four sides of the Domain with a hedge, with ornamental trees at intervals, and it was announced by Mr. Brown during the evening that the tree-planting w.ouid take place on Wednesday next. On behalf of the Domain Board he extended an invitation for the public to assist.. Mr. Robertson, M.P., is interesting himself in tho matteii of making Otaki a etopping-placo for the Auckland express. ' Word has been recefved that Miss Monteith, who has teen on an extended holiday to England, has left Home for New Zealand, and will arrive hero during the month of October. Mr. Richard Borah contemplates 'building a large town hall at Manakau at an early dote, to replace the one recently deetroyed by fire.

Mαfon, while .engaged on his farm near Foilding, was knocked down by a bull and trampled on. no sustained frnclnro of several ribs, and a number of bruises. The residents of Pakihikiira Riding, in the Kiwitea County,, purpose tendering Mr. and Mr,?. F. F. Hockly a social farewell and a presentation next Friday. Mr., Hockly, who for many years renresonted the riding on the council, disposed of his farm recently, and will shortly remove' elsewhere. Commissioner Richards, head of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, accomiinnied by Colonel Fisher and Brigadier Brny, arrived in Fcildiiiß at noon to-day, and was met by a -strong force of tho local branch of , the Army. Mr. E. Goodbplierc (Mayor) and members of tho Borough Council received tho Commissioner, and tho Mayor offered an official welcome, to Feilding. The Commissioner and members of his, party were the guests at a banquet in the Drill Hall last oven inn, and a public reception followed, the Mayor presiding,
