MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

WAS THE PEPPER PURE? OR DID IT CONTAIN STARCH? At the Magistrate's Court yesterday a charge of having sold popper which- contained starch was made, against A. E. Bouden, grocer, Tinakori Road.
Mr. Macassey represented the Crown, and Mr. T. 31. Wilford appeared for the defendant. In support of the charge the prosecution put in a certificate, by the Dominion Analyst, which was to the effect that the pepper contained starch. Defendant BouSen, in evidence, stated that he had not "put tho peppei up," but hod sold it as he had bought it—in the tin.' He had bought tho pepper from the firm of A. S. Peterson. - Norman Raymond, n, representative cf the firm of A. "S. Pntorsou, stated that tho firm had bought the pepper from B. H. Crease and Son, of Quin Street. It was remarked that Bouden could hayo protected himself by getting a guaiantee that tho peppeir was pure. Bouden was ordered to pay the costs, which amounted to J!l 18s. Gd. THE CITY LIFE. COUNTRY BOY GOES ASTRAY. In the Jlagistjnte'e Court yesterday a youth (a Railway Department cadet) pleaded guilty to a charge of having stolen troin 1-rancis Hare a suit of- clothes, a pan; of boots, a case of spoons, a sold chain, and other articles, of tho total value of .£lO. 110 entered a similar plea to a charge, of having stolen • a sovereign trom Hare.
Chiof-Detechvo Broberg snitl that tho youth had come from Otago about a month ago to work in the Railway Department, and arrangements had been made for him , to stay at Mr. Hare's. Shortly after having taken up his abode there, however, he had begun to steal. He had pawned the articles taken, and had received £1 ss. for them. Since then the whole of the property, with the exception of the sovereign had been recovered. Accused, who was receiving «E1 10s. -per week, had apparently endeavoured to follow other youths, and lead a "city Iifo" on a limited income. Ho had previously had no experience of life in a city, and witness did not think that he was capable of looking after himself. He was sixteen years of age. . Accused was remanded till Thursday, and in the meantime his father is to Ire communicatod with.
OTHER CASES. William Andreirs was fined 10?., with costs 75., for haviug left a cart unattended in a public thoroughfare. Frederick Parslow was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for having disobeyed a maintenance order-made by the Court..
For insobriety, Nora Nugent was fined £3, James Oliver Armstrong £1, David Taft £2, John Christie 10s., John Byrno JJI, and William Egain £1. For having used certain language in public, John Byrno and William Egan were each fined ,£3.
A sentence of two months' imprisonment was imposed cm Kolxirt Jf'Carry for his'having stolen a roll of baton, valued at- lGs., from Thomas Lavin.
Richard 'Anderson anci Grorgo Jfaddock were fined £1 each for having committed a breach of the pence. The disturbance took place in a tramcar, and a window of the oar was broken. The defendants were ordcmkto pay, ss. each on account of the. broken window.
