S.S. KATOA IN POKT. Thero arrived at Wellington, direct from the builders' hands in Sunderland, ou Saturday, a splendid addition to the Union Company's increasing fleet of steamers of the "K" class. She is named tho Katoa. and she was specially constructed for the company by Messrs. Osborne. Graham, and Co., Hylton, Sunderland. The Katoa is the fifth steamer constructed by this firm for the Union Company, ' Sho is of the single-deck type, witli poop, bridge, and forecastle havmir clear holds. She is designed to caj-ry 3705 tons, and is 309 ft. by 45ft. by. 22ft. lin. moulded. A long bridge is fitted, on top of whic.n is accommodation for.officers and a few passengers. Above is a navigating bridgo with charthousc,_ wheelhousc, and flying bridge. Eight winches, a- warping winch, and electric light throughout have ' been fitted. The engines, which develop 15C0 indicated horse-power, and boilers were supplied by Messrs. George Clark, Ltd., Sunderland. She was in a half-loaded condition on her trials, and the trial of 12 hours duration resulted in her obtaining a mean speed of 12 knots, which was satisfactory.

The Katoa proceeded to Middlesbrough to _ complete the loading of lier first cargo, for New Zealand, and left there on May 19 for Fremantle. En routo she wits compelled to put into Las ,Y 1 °JJ account of her cargo having stinted.
