BOTH CAPTURED. (By Telcgrapli— Press Association.) Auckland, August 31. "Ginger" Smith, one of the criminals who escaped from the Avondnle Mental Hospital, was recaptured at Hamilton. He was recognised while walking along tho street, and was pounced upon ana handcuffed by a constable without beyig given any chance of resistance. Smith was placed in a cell and searched. The constable found in his pocket a tin of cayenne pepper, such as is used by notorious criminals in preference to firearms. Smith was subsequently caught in. the act of prising tho boards off the floor of his cell by tho aid of the handle of a bucket. He was kept under close super: vision until placed in the train, which arrived at Auckland at 2. o'clock this afternoon. He will bo returned to the mental hospital, but will probably be transferred toi ga01,., the authorities .having como to the conclusion that Smith has been malingering. Auckland, .September 1. Both the criminal lunatics who escaped from the Mental Hospital have been captured, and have been returned to the institution. Brockbank was arrested by a constable in the main street at Mercer on Saturday.
