The Niagara is being built by Mec-srs. Jesin Brown and Co., of Clydebank, who built the Lusitania, and who ore at present building the world's largest steamer, tlie Cunard liner Aquitania. A telegram received by tho local offlco of tho Union Company from Westport yesterday stated that there was a heavy "fresh" in tho river, and a heavy sea on the bar. The Mapourika was outside unable to enter. If sho got ih, however, it was intended to dispatch her for Nelson and Wellington at 10 a.m. to-day.

'AT. HEADQUARTERS. An arrival at Dunedirron Tuesday last was the Union Company's new, steamer Karamu date Harmony), and singularly enough, she steamed up the harbour in company with her sister ship, the Kowhai, of which, she is almost an identical counterpart, tho only difference being that the Karamu is an improved model. She Corresponds in size also, being only 8 tons larger than tb6 Kowhai. Tho Karamu was constructed . by Messrs. Bamish, Fergnsson. and Co., Loith. She ran her official trisJs iu Juno, whon she averaged' 113 knots. According to tho "Star." the second officer reported that she left on June 18 for the future sphcro of her usefulness, being filled un with 900 tons of bunkers for the passage out. Tho weather was' only fairly crood as far as Las Pnlmas. Thence till Maatsua-ker Light. Tasmania, was Sighted, the weather was fine. Tho passage to Hobart, which occupied 58 days, was extromely Quiet, only one vessel being sighted, and that too far off for recognition. Kaipara, Harbour Signal Station.—Sfotice , is given that, owincr to the distance of the Kaipara Bar from tho shore, ajid the tortuous nature of the channels, the signalman cannot keep the vessel's position iji relation to the channel in eight when the light is not good. A vessel should not take the bar unless a safe anchorage can be gained inside Pouio or South'Hcad before dark, or the signals to take the bar are shown. Grcymouth reported that the weather there yesterday was bad, and that there had been no shinning movements of tho port during the day. There was a heavy sea on tho bar and a "fresh" in tho river. The steamers Koonya, Putiki, and Alexander were inside, and the Opouri, Himitangi, aud Ngatoro outside the bar. Telegraphic advice received from Nelson yesterday stated that the coastal steamer Defender had put in there for repairs at 10.50 a.m. H.M.S. Pioneer, which left Akaroa for , Lyttelton at 11.50 a.m. yesterday, returned to an anchorage in the stream. She was. 1 scheduled to sail at 6 a.m. t>day.
