An unusual case camo beforo tlio l'olico Court to-day, when Ellen Baker, a married woman, was charged that, being a person having custody of a two-months-old child, she did wilfully abandon such child in a manner likely to causo it unnecessary suffering or injury to its health. Accused was complainant in an affiliation case, Baker v. Johnston. Johnston has been remanded several times. Complainant, who was a married woman, was then living at Hunlly, but eventually she camo here to prosecute him. In the meantime Johnston was on his way to Huntly, and was brought back to Dunedin, being l'omanded for a week in order that complainant might obtain tho necessary evidence. When accused camo hero slic had very little money, and now she had spent all she had, and was unable to support the child. She took tho child to Johnston's mother's house, and left it thero. Kvidcnce showed that accused went to Johnston's mother's house last night, and left the .child on the doorstep, with tlio remark, "Here is your son's child." There was a letter left with tlio child in which the woman said she could not keep it . She, however, left enough i'ootl to keep it for a month or two, and enough clothes to do it for a year. The clothes and food were rolled up in a bundle, including a fairly extensive supply of condensed milk and clothing. After hearing the evidence, tho magistrate dismissed the case. The child was subsequently committed to an industrial school, RAILWAY EXTENSION. Nelson, August 30. A parly of members of Parliament i,- expected to arrive to-morrow in connection with tho opening of the Glonhope scclion of tlio railway on Monday. Tho Ministers for railway and Public Works will reach Nelson on Sunday. GOOD NEWS FOR BOILERMAKERS. Duncdin, August 30. Tho Minister of Mines has informed the Boilermakers' Union that in future any machinery and ironwork which can Ixs suitably manufactured in the Dominion is to bo obtained hero unimported. DERAILED. Gisborne, August 30. As a train from Gisborne was entering tho Otolco Station yards this morn, iiif, au engine and four trucks left the rails. Tlio engine was damaged, but no ono was hurt. PECULIAR SEQUENCE OF MISHAPS. . Invercnrgiil, August ,30. Ho was removed to tho hospital, ivhoro it .v-is ascertained that no bones wero broken. Soiuo tinio later his mate, James Stawvay, wl en mounting a ladder fell to tlio ground in a stato of collapse. Ho was also removed to the hospital, suffering from shock. Both men aro recovering. ( SCIENTISTS' CELEBRATION. • Christchurch,' August 30. The jubilee of tho Canterbury Philosophical Society was celebrated by a largo and brilliant gathering at the Art Gallery, to-night. Dr. Cockayne, (president), in a lengthy and ablo address, sketched the history of the society and the scientilio work achieved and to 1)0 done. Mir. G. M. Thomson, M.P., detailed what the Government proposed to do to encourage scientific research ill New Zealand. > During the evening Dr. Cockayno was presented with tho .Hector medal for scientific research ill botanical work. , BRAWLERS IN A BAR. Palmerston, August 30. At tho Magistrate's Court to-day Harold Webby, a young man, was' found guilty of assaulting Ernest Henderson, another young man in a local hotel bar, and was sentenced to throe days' imnrisonnicnt and ordered to pav .£2 14s. costs. The case was a sequel to'that in which O'A'eil recently received sentenco for as, saulting an ex-footballer named Stalker, both occurrences taking placc at the same time.
