A MOUNTAIN PLAYGROUND.
OPENING UP 'THE TARARUAS. Those city residents who enjoy mountaineering expeditions will be pleased to learn that a movement has been set on foot in Otaki to open up a permanent track across the Tarorua. Ranges from Otaki to Greytown, and also down to Kaitoke. Some little time ago a committee was set up, with Mr. Morgan Carkeek as chairman, and it was decided to start a subscription for the purpose of clearing a track across the- mountains and building huts. A practicable track, it was pointed out, would open up a magnificent mountain playground within easy reach of city dwellers for week-end trips. The two-day journey from Otaki to the Wairerapa provides a series of fino panoramas, and charming views of mountain, river, and forest scenery. With permanent huts it will bo possible for parties to make the- trip in much lighter trim than hitherto, and with nvuch less fatigue. Those who wish to assist in opening up the route should communicate with Mr. \v. Burns Smith, of Otaki, who is secretary to the committee, and who will bo pleased to receive donations.
