» ' ANNUAL MEETING". ■. / " (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, August 27. At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. E. Hill Fisher was elected president. . Tlte retiring president,' the Hon. \ W. E. Wigram, delivered an address dealing with the world's production of gold, showing that tho accumulation of gold was causing a depreciation in that metal to the disadvantage of creditor countries liko England, and an advantage to debtor countries like New Zealand. H*. believed the prosperity of New Zealond was due in some measure to tho increased production of gold, and the consequent ;ncreaso of prices. Referring to national finance, Mr. Wigram said the recent loan had to bo raised at an inconvenient time. He suggested a return to the system of 15 to 40 year loans, which were repayable or convertible at any timo between 15 and.4o years. ' He also thought New Zealand should adopt a system of Consols.
