Congress was about to adjourn, when Senator La Eollette Taised the question of the Archbold-Roosevelt controversy, demanding a complete investigation. The situation was further complicated by a telegraphic demand from Mr. Roosevelt, asking leave to appear before the Investigating to explain Mr. Archbold's allegations. Mr. Roosevelt is prepared to offer evidence regarding letters sent to his secretary, Mr. Cortelyou, in 1904, when he learned of the Standard Oil Trust's contribution towards'his campaign funds. The letters show that Mr. Roosevelt ordered the contribution to be returned.
