GALES AT THE ISLANDS.
A CUTTER WRECKED. ' ■ j (By Telegraph.— Press Association.) Auckland, August 2G. Officers of the Fiji Government steamer Ranadi, which arrived from Suva last night, state that tho weather which has been prevalent in the islands this winter is tho worst that has been experienced for several seasons. A succession of heavy easterly gales lias made navigation of tho coral-hound islands a difficult matter, and during tho last few weeks soveral vessels have been in trouble. The most serious happening was tho total wreck of a 2S-ton islaud-owned cutter, which was piled up on Nnsalai Reef during the storm a lew nights before tho Ranadi sailed. Tho crew, made up of islanders, were all successful in reaching shore, soino after being in the water for 21 liuurs. Tho steamer Dorrigo, employed in the Suva and Sainonn mail service, touched a reef at one of the island ports. Divers wero unable to estimate the extent of the damage, and the steamer sailed for Wallace. Sho was four days overduo at Suva on tho return passage when tho Ranadi' sailed.
