Tho Hon. F. SI. B. Fisher is due to return this morning from Christclmrcli. Tlio Hon. Maurico Baring, at present the guest of his Excellency the Governor, will be the guest of honour at tlio New Zealand Chili's luncheon on Thursday next. The distinguished visitor will speak on "Russian Impressions." Tho lions. E. C. J. Stevens and G. J. Smith arrive in Wellington from tlio south by tho Mararoa this morning. Captain H. M. W. Richardson, Adjutant of tlio Fifth Regiment (Wellington Rifles), is at present on holiday leave. Major-Genoral A. .T. Godlcy (officer commanding New Zealand Forces) is at prosent confined to his room with a chill. .Mr. A. D. Lynch, solicitor, of Wairoa, who has been on a business visit to Wellington, left last night by tlio Mokoia for Napier. Lieutenant R. C. Hay-Mackenzie, of tho Wellington Mountain Batter)' ("D"), having been transferred in his civil capacity as a member of the staff of tlio Bank of New Zealand from tho branch office in Wellington to Gislwrne, on promotion, has resigned his Territorial appointment, much to the regret of his brother officers and the battery generally. Included among the passengers arriving by tlio Slararoa this morning aro: Tho Rev. Canon Farland, Father Kcenan, Dr. J. Guthrie, Dr. N. Guthrie, Colonel C. J. Cooper, and Mr. G. Witty, M.P. For the purpose of handing over to Mr. Borneo Gardiner the proceeds of a complimentary'concert, held for his benefit, between twenty and thirty friends assembled at tho Burlington Cafe, Willis Street, yesterday evening., Tho Rev. Father Hickson, who presided, eulogised Mr. Gardiner's efforts in tho cause of charity in Wellington, and then called on Mr. Bock, treasurer, to hand to Mr. Gardiner a cheque for .£llO. Sir. Gardiner briefly returned thanks. Speeches wore also delivered by Messrs. Keenan (secretary), J. Carr, and Fletcher, and others. Mr. J. D. Williams, managing director of the Williams Picture (Theatres, of Sydney and Jlelbourne, is to visit Wellington in about a fortnight's time, in connection with tho acquisition of tho Adelphi Picture Company's business in Wellington. After ten years' service as master of the Melanesian Mission steamer Southern Cross, Captain W. Sinker has been obliged to resign his position, owing to ill-health, brought on by sunstroke and malaria. Captain Sinker leaves Auckland for England early in September. Captain Burgess, late chief officer, will take command of the Southern Cross. In the annual report of tho Star Boating Club, the committee expresses its sincere regret at the death of two life members, Sir. H. Pollen (who joined the club in 1875) and Mr. F. P.ownall (a member since 18S6); also at the sad deaths of Messrs. E. Ha con, B-. Gray, and J. Bennett, who were well known, to most of tho present members. Tho death is reported of Dr. P. J. Mussen, who came to New Zealand in tho early fifties, aJid served throughout tho second 'Maori war in the capacity of medical officer. He served under General Cameron nmd Colonel Whitniore, and was attached to the Forest Rangers, under Major Von Tempsky. Sergeant Harvey was presented with a silver teapot by tho members of tho local police force last evening on the occasion of his. transference to Taihape. The presentation was made by Station-Sergeant Llarby in felicitous terms.
