Captain Norman Macdonald, who recently retired from the position of harbour- ■ master at the Bluff, after 35 voars' «orvic" i was presented with an illuminated aridrew i and a- purse of sovereigns, subscribed bv . over 2CO friends. ' ' The Mayor (Mr. W. Hinchcy) presided, and ' m makiiif tun pfotentaiion, raid that be I fore Captain Macdonald came to the Bluff]t
tlie harbour had a very bad name, so much , so that shipowners dimply declined to allow their ships to come to the Bliiir, it ml insurance companion would not insure large* vcssols bound for the port. He -was an enterprising man, with the courage of his convictions, and lie set about breaking 1 down the prejudice existing against, tlio j harbour. He made a. thorough success of | it, and the Bluff was now considered one ■ of the safest harbours for vessels of all 1 sizes. Captain Macdoinld's service had i made the port what it was. He had saved | it from being what it might be termed— merely a suburb of Otago Harbour. The ] circumstance?, of hi-3 Kevt'ring hi? connee- j tion with the Bluff harbour were well known. It was a strong statement- to make —and he did net care who hc.i.rd it—but I Captain Macdonald had been the victim of the crassest injustice ever meted out to a public servant. Kc made that statement voluntarily, and he knew that it would bo backed up by nil the residents of the Bluff and Southland. (Cheers.) Cantains trading to the Bluff knew life worth. o,nd were of.the t-anio opinion as himself and hundreds of others. (Cheers.) Captain Maedonald had spent the best part of his life in the service of the Bluff harbour, and he hud cot very little for it, execut ingratitude. (Cheers.) Captain Macdonald has taken up his residence in Duncdiu. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Captain W. J. Grigg, chief officer of tho Tasman, has taken command of the Nor-' them Company's liotomnhnna, in place of Captain YV". Bettis. who br.i transferred to the Tasman. Captain C. Faulkner, of the To.=ntau, has transferred to tho Daphne, rolioviiip Captain J. Tcixeira, who has como ashore for orders. Mr. \V. Kennedy, chief engineer of the Breeze, left tho vessel at Wellington on Saturday. Mr. C. Croucher, late chief officer of tho Breeze, has taken charge of the schooner Falcon, vice Captain Tt. Gibson. Captain Fletcher, of the Mangapapa, who has been on holiday leave, left by tho Arahura on Saturday to join his vessel at West port. After an absence of some weeks, the Union Company's ferry steamer Mararoa arrived at Wellington from Lytteltou on Saturday morning. The vep;cl has undergone complete- overhaul at Port Chnluiors. including tho fittins of a new shaft and thrust block. An arrival in port from. Newcastle yestclday morning was the Melbourne Steamshin Company's collier, Melbourne. After having been granted pratique, tho vessel berthed at the Miramar wharf to discharge coal for tho gasworks. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion 6tcamer Kai Ora, which sailed from London on August 3, is due at. Duuedin about September 16. and at Lyttclton about September 25. An extraordinarily fast, passage of 67 days from Hamburg to Talcahuano (Ohili) was recently completed by the German fourmasted barque Peking. Thts vessel, which waS built only last year, is a large steel barque 0f.2693 tons resistor, and is owned by P. Laiesz, of Hamburg. She bolones to the famous P. Line, which. illeludes tho flvc-m.v.tod baronc Potosi, and a number of fast four-masters, whoee names commence with the letter "P." These vessels, which are exclusively employed in the. Jlainbure-ChiH trade, are noted for their fast sailing qualities. A load of timber is to bo taken from Waiijtaiiul to Sydney by the Canterbury hteamship Co.'s Pclonc. Subsequently, she will return to Wiuiganui with coal from Newcastle. According to a sonthorn exchange, tho Grey bar is badly shoaled just now, and promises to prove very troublesome to steamers trading on the West Coast, Tho White Star Line training' ship Mersey, with J3 cadets on board, is to leave London about the end of this month for Sydney. The old Orient liner Ormuz, recently sold to trench buyers, has been renamed Divonn, In her day the Ormuz was a noted ' fhor ' in the •London-Australian mail service, and, together with such vessels an , the Oriout, Cuzco, and Austral, ran sue- ! cessfully until she was forced to give place to the .Ophir and Omrah class, which in time were joined by the steamers Or.-ima.
