Bryan, the well-known Democratic leader, in assailing the Progressive party's programme, assails its tariff plank as a. mero sham, which lias been uecd for many generations to deoeivo the public. Tho trust plank, he declares, is a restatement of Mr. Roosevelt's position leading directly to Socialism. Air. Roosevelt's pnrty clings to tho idea that the trusts may bo left in private hands concurrently with the control of them through a National Bureau. History, however, rtroves that this is incorrect. DEFECTION FROM TAFT PARTY. . Washington, August 22. Senator Cummins has "ratted" from tho Toft party in order to support Mr. Roosevelt. Ho says ho is convinced that Mr. Taft's nomination was fraudulent. ' Tho Taft men declare that Mr. Cummins is a lukewarm Republican anyhow.
