Dr. J. A. Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, left for Auckland yesterday morning. His visit to Auckland will extend over several days.
A special meeting of tho Napier Borough Council was liold last night to deal with tho applications (sixty-eight in number) for the position of clerk of works for tho electric-lighting tind tramways schemes. Mr. Black, consulting engineer, was authorised to mnke tho final selection from Messrs. Clough (Auckland), Swinburn (Hastings), O'Neil (Dunedin), and Carrick (Gisborne), and report to the council as early as possible—Press Association.
Captain Swindley, chairman of the Coroinandel i County Council, and a member of tho Thames Licensing Bench, died at Coroinomlel on Thursday night. He was a very old colonist. After serving in India, he came to this country, and served in the Maori War. Hβ was a. resident of the Coroinandel district for a period of 40 years. During that timo Captain Swindley took a prominent part in local politics. He leaves a widow and two sons One is Mr. J. Swindley, dentist, of Oamaru, and the other Mr. Robert Swindloy, formerly in business in Dunedin as a dentist, but now in Canada.
Mr. Borneo Gardiner, the popular entertainer, of Wellington, wtio has accepted an engagement with the Eickards management, Sydney, is to be entertained by his friends at tho Burlington rooms on lionday evening. Advantage will be takon of the occasion : to present him with a purso of 110 sovereigns, tho result of the recent complimentary, concert tendered him at tho Town Hall.
The wedding takes place.at Auckland to-day of Miss Violet Lodder, daughter of the lato Mr. A. V. Lodder, of Wellington, who is marrying Mr. Joseph M'Mahoh, proprietor of the Queen's Theatre, Auckland, and brother of Mr. Charles M'Mahon, of Wellington, and Mr. James M'Mahon, of Sydney, all well known in tho theatrical world.
The funeral of the lato Mr. C. S. Nixon, formerly Collector of Customs at Wellington, took place yesterday morning. Tho Rev. Mr. Barnott, of St. Paul's ProCathedral, officiated at the graveside, at Karorl. The cortege, which was a verylong one, included representatives of almost all the Government Departments. Atnong thoso present were: The Hon. l< 1 Aγ. B. Fisher (Minister for Customs), Mr. W. B. Montgomery (Secretary for Customs), Mr. W. Rose (Acting-Collector), Mr. M. P. Cameron, Sir Arthur Guinness, Sir Kenneth Douglas, Colonel It. J. Collins, Mr. J. W. Poynton, Mr. A. A. Simpeon, Mr. H. E. Nicholls Captain Johnson, Mr. Harold Beauchamp, the Rev. H. Van Stnveren, and several officials of the Thorndon Bowling Club. Numerous floral tributes testified to tho sympathy and respect of many friends of the deceased.
A quiet wedding was celebrated at St. Anns Church, Northland, on Wednesday last, when Mr. George J. W; Cooper, second eon of tho late Mr. Frederick Cooper, of- Wellington, whs .married to Caroline May, seoond daughter of Mr. G. A. Bitson, of Wellington. The cere-' , mony was performed by Rev. J. G. S. Hartlett Hie bride was given away by her father. Miss Bitson (sister of tho bride) was bridesmaid, and Mr. Sydney Tingey acted as best man.
Mrs. T. G. Macarthy is.loaving Wellington for the country on Monday nest. She will probably be absout from town for a week or two.
