WELL-KNOWN MAORI DROWNED.
DEATH OP GEOEGE TAIAROA, (By Tcleg-raph.-Prcsa Association.) Dunedin, August 23. A drowning accident occurred in the harbour basin lato this afternoon, by which George Tuiaroa, about 50 years of age, and a member of tho well-known, Maori family of. that name, met hie death. It appears that Taiaroa left the Jetty Street Wharf about ten minutes to five, en route lor his rosidonce at the Heads in a launch, of which ho was the sole occupant. In tho middlo of the basin ho went forward to adjust a sail which was. also carried, and, while returning, slipped and fell overboard, ihough a strong swimmer, he was probably handicapped by the thick boots which be was said to nave been weaving, and soon disappeared. The launch then ran into tho Eattray Street Wharf, breaking ono of its two masts, and sustaining; other slight damnge. A Harbour Board employee, named Booth, immediately put out in a boat, but too late to render assistance. Some drodgo hands and a waterman named Madigan also put out, but do no purpose. Tho police have beea dragging for the. body, but without avail.
