MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, August 22. Station-holders iu this district are 'experiencing difficulty in procuring labour. Ono owner has been offering 30s, per week and found, but has been unable to recurs men. He states that men will come to him for n few weeks, but they soon eel tired of country life, and return to the towns on the first available opportunity. -It is anticipated that lord Islington, Grand President of the Overseas Club in New Zealand, will officially op-en the local branch of the club prior to his departure for England. A meeting, called by the Tinui branch of the Farmers' Union, was held in the Public Hall on "Tuesday, to discuss the question of the proposed East Coast Government railway. Mr. E. C. Daniell, of Masterton, was present by invitation, and explained the history and present position of the movement to open ivp the Ea.-fc Coast country by railway. The wliolo of those present decided to join the Pongaron Railway League. Mr. H. A. Kevins was appointed Tinui delegate to tho proposed deputation to the Minister for Public Works on the subject. The statement filed in. the estate ot Hans reter Petersen, of Opalci, farmer, shows assets amounting to .l'4~ 18s., and liabilities £t)o 16s. The bankrupt attributes his position to loss on crops, and to the mortgagee selling his cows and implements. , The Masterton Amnteur Dramatic Society intend staging "H.M.S. Pinafore" on September 11 and 12. - The ladic-s' hockey match between Craven College (Palnierston North) and tho . Wairarapa ladies' representatives, which was to have been played to-day, was abandoned, in consequence q[ the Palnierston team not putting in an appearance.
