In reply to a question, regarding n rumoiir thilt Japan was negotiating with Franco for tlie purchase of New Caledonia, it was officially stated in tho Itotise of Representatives that nothing was known as to the authenticity of the report. The available information indicated that from four to five thousand Japanese wore resident ill New Caledonia, as against 1200 to 15ti0 five years ago. There was foundation for tho allegation that most of ilio new Japanese immigrants were exsoldiers.
