FRENCH COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION.

MISS MONA GALE WINS THE GOLD MEDAL. The competition hold by the Cercle Litterairo Francais to deeido tho winners of tho gold and silver medals offered by tho cercle, for proficiency in the French language, took placo in tho Camera Club's rooms on Saturday last. The, competition, probably through being limited to students of Hie public and private schools who are under 18 years of age, did not produce as many competitors as was expected, eight only entering for' examination. Nevertheless, this being the .first of the annual competitions' to bo held by tho oerole, it waa derided to proceed with tho examination, and'in view of tho ability shown by the competitors, tho cerclo considers tho result of its efforts as very satisfactory. Tho report presented to tile council of tho oerclo by the examiners (tho Hon. J. Bigg, Captain Barclay, et Monsieur Declceve), showed that tho highest percentage of marks for reading, writing, and speaking tho French language had been awarded to Miss Mona Galo (93 per cent.), and tho next highest to Miss Dorothy Evans (8G per cent.). It was therefore decided by tho council that tho gold medal should bo awarded to Miss Galo and the silver modal to Miss Evans, subject to their satisfying tho council as to their respective ages; also that these medals should bo presented to the winners at tho annual fete of the cercle to be held on September 21. The examiners spoke in high terms of tho qualifications of the candidate as a whole, and pointed to tho fact that the candidate lowest on tho list had received 75 per cent, of the maximum number of marks awarded, in what they considered a high standard, as evidence of tho excellent teaching of French that obtains in some of tho private echooJs in the city.
