Tho annual meeting of the Woirarapa branch o£ tho New Zealand Educational Institute was hold on Saturday, when the following officers were elected:—President, Mr. C. A. Jones; vice-presidents, Messrs. I?. J. Foss and D. Leslie; secretary ami , treasurer, Miss E. Williams i committee,' Misses Lazarus, Wolff, and Haggitt, and Messrs. H. Nightingale and Stout. Somo trouble is reported to havu arisen among tho employees of tho .Waingawn Freezing Works, over the question or registration. An effort that is being made (from Wellington)' to induce tlio men Iα register under different union?, is beinff A meeting of the Meat Workers,, Union is called for to-night. A hockey match between the Cravon Collcgo (Palmcrslon North) ladies and tho Wairnrnpa lady representatives is to be plavcd hero on Thursday next. The monthly meeting of tho Wairarapa Centre of the New Zealand Athletic Union was held on Saturday last. It was decided that tho annual .meeting bo held on. Saturday, September 21. A meeting of settlers interested in tho proposed extension of tho telephone service to Kopnranga, Mnngamnhoc, und Ilniriuiii Valley, was hold hero on Saturday, when the movement was advanced another stage. Mr. F. H. Bakewoll, Inspector of Schools, read an oxccllent paper before tho Wairnrapa Branch of tho New Zealand Educational Institute) on Saturday last, on "An Educational Triad." Mr. Bakowell dealt with tho educational ideals of the three reformers, Portalozzi, Frocbol, and Herbert.: Ho was accorded a, hearty vote of thanki. Considerable trado is being dono at present by Masterton nnd Forty Mile Bush retailors with Auckland and Palnicrston North houses. Moore, of Carterton, stated that tho dairy' industry wan responsible for the circulotion of £50,000 per year in his district. At tho fortnightly meeting of the Wairarapa Sugby Union, held on Saturday, it was decided that an effort bo made to secure a mntch with the Auckland.City team, which will pass through tho Wnirarapa shortly. Permission was granted to tho Mnsterion clubs to arrange u mnlcli! if possible. 3fr. D. Hctanton, organiser of the Masterton district branch uf the New Zealand Farmers' Union, visited the Lowe Valley last week, and secured a number of promises of membership. The Wairarapn. Caledonian Society has decided to hold ono of its popular concerts at Carterton at an early date. Onions are very scarce in the Wairaw rapa just now. Potatoes also aro bring* ing high prices. Mr. B. ft. flayner has boon appointed a director of the Wnirarayo. Caledonian. Society. Mr. B.
