HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

About 40 ratepayers were present at the statutory meeting held in St. Augustine's Hall last night, when the Mayor (,Alr. J. W. M'Ewan) detailed the allocations of the various schemes set out under the Potono loan. ■ The main work would bo the sewerage scheme, which would erst .£40,000, and in jvhich there would bo a proposal to assist ratepayers to connect up. The interest on this advance, would not be more than 6 per cent. It would cost each ratepayer ,£l2 to connect his house, on an average, and this wcuttl include the advancement, and the money would be paid back • over a period from one to ten years. Regarding tho- waterworks loan of ,£2OOO, the speaker 6aid that the Council wero forced (under the Public AVorks Act) to take certain blocks of land adjacent to the present reservoir, and tho time had now arrived when a larger water supply was required. The clock loan of .£SOO was the outcome of a request from several citizens of Petone, who thought that a public clock was necessary. If tho proposal -was carried, an up-to-dato time-piece would be installed. In answer to a question, Mr. M'Ewan stated that it was hoped to borrow the money from tho Government at , 3i per cent. Failing this, tho vonncil would have to go on tho open market, but, in any case, they would not be prepared to pay more than 4fc per cent. Mr. Brocklebank asked how the si.pply of water, which was very low in summer, could cope- with the sewerage requirements. '■ The Mayor replied that there -would be no difficulty regarding this. The supply' was always there, but the people used" more water in summer. He had never had any fear of the water supply, even , with a sewerage scheme in operation. A number of other questions wero asked and answered. Tho poll., will take place on September 2. Mr. M'Ewan was accorded a vote of thanks.
