HEADING THE HERDS.
AGRICULTURAL DEPARTMENT'S ATTITUDE. The, Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. W. F. Mossey), replying: to a request made by Pelorhs Valley settlors for the hire of a well-bred bull from the State herds, so as to improvo their dairy herds, says:—"Tho Department has no animals available for this purpose. Ttoo practice of sending out stud bulls for service was tried some years ago, but proved unsuccessful, and it has therefore been discontinued. In lieu thereof the Department is endeavouring to breed ■ a number of high-class animals which will be available for sale to farmers at reasonable rates. Herds are being established at tho experiment farms for this purpose, and it is hoped in a year or two to have a fairly large draft of animals available each year for sale. I would suggest that several of the leading suppliers to your factory band together and purchase a bull of the breed most fancied in your district. Tho services of the animal might then bo made available for other suppliers to tho factory. If you thought of doing this, you might communicato with tho Director of Fields and Experiment Farms Division, Department of Agriculture, Commerce, and Tourists, Wellington, who will adviseyou whether tho Department has any bulls for sale, and, if so, will notify you of the price." A business man," whether no bo in chargo of a Bank or a Factory, should know a good thing when ho sees it. Abundance ot evidence is forthcoming that tho Factory managers of Taranaki reali-e tho superiority of "Victor" Vats. About 80 of these Vats are being supplied for that go-ahead provinco alone, which augurs well for Taranaki's progress and factory shareholders' pockets. Full particulars concerning "Victor" Vats obtainable from Albert J. Partin, Carterton.—Aclvt. The old oak frigate H.M.S. Southampton has been sold by the Admiralty to Messrs. Hughes, Bolekow, and Co., Limited, ship-breakers, Newcastle. This interesting old ship was laid down at: Dontford Dockyard in 180G, the year after tho Battle 'of Trafalgar. Owing to the demand for seasoned oak at that time sho was not completed until 1819. She did good service on tho South African station, and in 1811 she saved Natal from the Boers by covering tho landing of two regiments of infantry. Sir Charles Tiippor, Bart., formerly Prime, Minister of Canada nnd the only survivor of the statesmen who assisted in arranging tho Federation of tbn Dominion, celebrated his ninety-first birtiday oa July."
