HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(From Ovr Special Correspondent,) -Under the .auspices of, the Petone Ten-, nis Club, a successful social evening was , giyen at St.. Augustine's Hall last evening. Cards and dancing, interspersed witb. musical items, wore tho features of tno programme. The ladies provided supper, and also arranged the decorations. ■■■ Matters in connection with the social evening which is to bo tendered to Mr. Webster (retiring town clerk of the Petone Borough Council) are well in hand, and a largo crowd is .expected next Tuesday evening at the Orange > Hall, where -ho send-off" is to be given. Tho Lower Hutt Fire Brigade held a social evening at the station rooms last evening. There was a full muster of members-and lady friends.- Cards engaged the attention of those present till supper timo; after which a dance was held. Tho monthly meeting of tho Potono District High School Committee was hold last evening. There were present: Messrs'. D. M'Konzio (chairman), W. Taylor, W. .Cox.'A'brahaU, Kirk, Tbwnsend, and Medhurst. Tho chairman of the Hutt District High School (Mr.' H. Baldwin) wroto inquiring whether the Petone Committee would bo favourable to a conference for the purpose of discussing the question of representation for the Hutt Valley on the Education Board. He also mentioned that Mr. Will'ord had .stated his intention of moving in the matter of altering the present system of electing representatives for the Education Board. The Hutt District School Committee thought that. it was now time to make a'more in the matter. It wasTesolved that the Hutt Committee bo informed that the Petone Committeo' wore favourable'to. a conference. The headmaster reported that tho number on the roll at the beginning of the month was:—Primary scholars, G95; secondary scholars, 51; admitted during tho.month, 19 (primary); withdrawn, (primary), 15. This left the roll number at 699. The average half-daily attendance was 88 per cent, (primary); and 9i (secondary). The attendance was regarded as satisfactory. It was. stated that the low percentage in the primary department was duo to the fact that tho first week of the month had proved exceptionally, wet throughout. The playground had been beautified by planting a number of trees. . Several hundredshrubs 'had been planted, ■ and there were a numbed', of other trees yet to come. It had also been arranged to have a wire-netting fence erecte'd round tho playground.
