The I'oad was so bad that ladies in tlio cabs reliised to alight in tho mud. Tho cabmen valiantly drove their vehicles on to a path, close to tho gates of the residence and a prosecution followed. Tho Mayor attended tlio Court and explained the position. GALLANT CONDUCT. THE ROADMAN AKD HIS MATE. a„ jj. .', Wair( > a . August 18. An instance of bravery on tho part of known, following tho partial recovery of a mate now in Wairoa Hospital. Oa the ;th instant two men, Daniel Murphy and limo,liy Hirhhy, wore engaged in widenng tho cutting of tho \Vaikari Inland Road, when a sip comprising fifty yards ot earth and boulders, swept Murphy down nearly 300 feet into tho S River. Hirhhy, who was working above his mate, jumped from the cutting, skidding down tho whole distanco and load, mg eight yards out in the river, which was fairly Hooded at tho ti cued Murphy in a state of unconsciousncss, earned him out, and then collapsed. Murphy was taken to tho hospital, suW ins from a broken jaw, severe bruises, and shock. Ho is now recovering. It is considered a caso worthy of recognition by tho Royal Humane Society.

CLAIM RESPECTING SHARES, Christchurch, August IG. An important judgment was delivered in the Magistrate's Court to-day. The New Zealand Wholesalo Club (in liquidation) claimed £W unpaid capital from Olaf Magnus in respect of- shares alleged to have been, allotted. Defendant denied receiving notice of allotment, and claimed, therefore, that he was not legally a shareholder. The magistrate said there was no direct evidence that notice of allotment had been givon, and that there was not sufficient to prove that a letter had been written for posting. Judgment was for defendant. < RAID AT HENDE'S FERRY. Hokltika, August 11. As b. result of a police raid at Hemde's Perry on August 5, Patrick Nolan, a \>ardinghouse-koepor, was to-day fined .£25 for unlawfully selling liquor and keeping liquor for sale.
