■—: —; —* (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, August 10. Tho criminal sittings of (ho Supremo Court were continued to-day. Frederick Joshua Weliley pleaded guilty to a certain assault. His Honour said that lie would postpone sentence in order to have some inquiries made as to the host thing to do with the man. Of course tho sentence -would have to be n substantial one. Bridget Chalk, .1 middle-aged woman,'was charged that, on May 17,' at Kaiapoi, she did (by an unlawful act which slio knew, or ought to have known to bo likely to cause death) perform an illegal operation on Martha Henderson, and that she did cause the death of Martha Henderson, and did thereby commit murder. V verdict of manslaughter, with' a stroii" recommendation to mercy was returned, on account of prisoner's age. A sentence of eijht years was imposed. Frunk Gascr.inbe was charged with the manslaughter of his wife, by inflicting ininrios In- a blow on the chin, which caused death. He was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
