"A VERY GOOD CASE."
DEPUTATION FROM RAGLANThe disabilities of bad roads suffered by the settlers on the Te Akau block were represented to the Prime Minister yesterday morning by a deputation introduced by the member for Raglan (Mr. R. F. Bollard). It was stated that when the block, containing 13,000 acres, was opened three years ago, it was loaded to pay for survey and roading, but the previous Government had not discharged its liability, and, in addition to suffering severe hardship, the settlers were handicapped in their efforts to utilise their holdings to the best advantage. Mr. Massey said the deputation had shown that the local bodies and the settlers had done their best to help themselves, and they had made out a very good case in support of their appeal for assistance. He promised that votes would be placed on the Public Works Estimates for the metalling of the Raglan-Whata-whata road, and the Mangati road. He also promised to assist the settlers in their effort to secure the reservation of an area of fifty acres of puriri bush which the deputation said it was desired should be preserved.
