(205.) ; - 110 0 ARGENTINE BEEF. Even in Argentina, which' possesses immense natural resources, and has also a' limited home demand, the meat outlook is occasioning not a little concern, both as regards the decreased prices obtained for its beef in London, and as to the future of the cattle supply at home. It is feared that tho herds aro not being conserved in each a way as to place the Republic In a position to "cope with future demands. According to official statistics there are 29,000,000 head of cattle in Argentina, a total which has not varied to any extent during the last four years. Taking the increase of stock at 25 per cent, in normal circumstances, the growth in the herda would be 7,000,000 head yearly. But from that aggregate must bo de'ducttd losses by disease, drought, and other causes. In the last few years there has been execs-, sive mortality, and it is estimated that last season 4,000,000 head of cattle were slaughtered for domestic consumption, and 1,000,000 for markets abroad, whilst the increase in the herds amounted to only 3.45 per cent. The Ministry deems this fact worthy of special attention, and has suggested a prudent limitation to tho slaughtering of cows. With reference to prices of beef in the London market, the Minister for Public Worlre has stated that since 1908 the average rate obtained for Argentina meat has fallen from about 19c. to 16c. por lb., and consignments of excellent meat have been sold as low as 7c. per lb. The Minister holds that it is absolutely necessary that new markets should bo opened up. "It becomes evident," he said recently, "that the beef problem is a world wide one, and that the United States is by no means the only country concerned about it."

LLOI'D'S NEW PREMIUMS. On July 1 there came into force t,he.revised rates of premiums, which Lloyd's underwriters have decided to enfc/rce as the result of the disasters experienced, by thorn of late. Commcntng on this, the "Financial Times" says:—"it has been calculated by several members of a. statistical turn of mind that an all-round advance of 5 per cent, in the rates charged by. the 'Room' for insurance protection would not only Tecover before the end of the year tho losses which have recently been sustained, but would also leave a substantial surplus. This estimate gives some idea of the enormous volume of Iwsinese transacted, a, factor which is very often left out of account by those who write in a rather sensational manner regarding the effects of such claims a.s were made in respect of the wrecks of the Delhi,' the Oceana, and the Titanic. Undoubtedly this succession bf claims wa.s a calamity for the 'Itoora,' but tho net total was nothing liko so great as some people imagine. By way of illustration 'we may recall that, while a total loss pa.id in respect of the bullion which the Oceana had on board when ehe went down, the greater part of this was recovered and realised in time to racot tho sums which, became due on the sinking of the Titanic. In other words, although the Oceana ranked technically as a 'total loss,' practically the whole of the most valuablo portion of her cargo was oventua.lly salved at a cost of between £40.CC0 and £50,000. The month of June was fortunately not characterised by any severe maritime catastrophe: on the contrary, the returns for the four weeks just ended show the number of accidents at sea to have been far below the average. a.nd if this state of affairs can be maintained, the outcome of operations during the second half of 1912 will go a long wav to mitigate the serious effects of the unprecedented claims put forward during the first half of the year." (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, August 15. The price of dressed flax has recently been steadily rising, and during the past six or seven weeks this increase has amounted to from £3 to £4 per ton. A member of the Ann of Messrs. Carr, Pountney and Co., which deals extensively in flax, informed a reporter that a bad season in the Philippine Islands, attributable to drought, which has affected the supply of Manila hemp, both as regards quantity and quality, is the prime cause of the rise. The principal demand for New Zealand flax is for-binder twine, and for this work it is subjected to keen competition by Manila fibre of one particular grade. The drought and bad seasons in the Philippines affected the quantity of the particular grade cn)ploycd, and caused a deterioration iu its quality. As the movement in prices may be attributed directly to speculative buying by London brokers, and as their information on that head may be expected to be much more up-to-date, than that of any local merchant, the Inference may fairly be drawn that a better price will rule in the future. This will possibly result, ho added, in reinstating the flax industry, which'has for eome time been at a rather low, ebb, and so soon as favourable weather permits of more extensive milling, larger Miipplics of dressed-fibre will be almost certain to come forward.
