THE SMITH FAMILY.
TREATMENT OF CHILDREN. (By Telegraph-Prosis Association.)' Christchurch, August 15. At the Supremo Court criminal sessions to-day, George Charles 'Arthur Smith and Emily Smith both pleaded guilty to wilfully neglecting two boys under the age of 14 years, of which they were the father and stepmother, in a manner likely to cause them unnecessary suffering. His Honour, addressing the male prisoner, said that he had been guilty of very callous conduct. This was not a case in which he could let the prisoner escape by a fine, as physical suffering had been inflicted on the children. Addressing the female prisoner, his Honour said that she was by law only guilty of the neglect of tho children in not keeping them clean. Tho evidence, however, showed that she had kept her own child in a clean condition. The male prisoner would bo sentenced to three months' imprisonment, and tho female prisoner would be fined X 5.
