Mr. W. N. Hedges, member of the Federal House of Representatives, representing Fi-einantle, is a through passenger from San Francisco to Sydney by tho Manuka.
Tho funeral of the late Mr. J. C. M'Kerrow took place yesterday afternoon. The interment was at tho Karori Cemetery, tho Rev. J. Gibson Smith officiating at the graveside. Among those- present were representatives of St. Andrew's Church and the Thonidon Bowling Club.
Tho Rev. Father O'Connell, of the Marist Mission, which has been working for some months in Australia, returned to Wellington by the Tahiti yesterday. A private letter from Sydney conveys tho news that Mr. John Barr, sub-editor of the "Bulletin," and formerly a wellknown Wellington journalist, is slowlv recovering from a very severe attack of pneumonia. M'Caw has taken, up duty as junior house surgeon at tho Wellington Hospital.

Mr. Wm. Martin, for the last twenty years or so the Tcspected manager ot Messrs. G. and T. Young's jewellery business, dropped dead at Timaru yesterday from heart failure, while engaged in conversation in tho street. The Rev. Mark H. Sutton" (Anglican) lias resigned his charge , at Bcvonport, (Auc.kla.iul), his intention being to return to England in tho conrso of a few months.
The Rev. T. Bain Maedonald (Presbvtcrian) has for reasons of ill-health resigned from the Mangere-Otahuhu charge, Auckland, Ms resignation to date from August 31.
The Rev. D. D. Scott, of Qnehuuga, has declined the call of tho Gore Presbyterian Church, tho emoluments of which are £50 more than his present stipend. Groat satisfaction has been expressed in Onehunga at his decision.
Mr. Ironside, chief gaoler at Auckland, who was recently detached by tho Minister for Justice to make an inspection oi tho prisons of tho Dominion, has completed that task. On his way hack to Auckland he will pay visits of inspection to the prison tree-planting camps nt Waipa and Waiotapu.
Mr. William Miller, of Gisborne, arrived back from a four months' visit to Australia by the Tahiti yesterday. Mr. Miller is at present concerned in,a moving picture enterprise in Brisbane and tho northern towns of Queensland. His partners are Messrs. J. Carroll and Harold Ashton. The syndicate opened the first continuous picture show in Brisbane on Saturday last.
• Mr. W. Arundel Orchard, a Sydney musician, at one time of Palinersfon North, is a visitor to Wellington. Mr. Orchard is to act as judge of tho vocal and instrumental sections at tho Auckland Competition Society's festival.
Mr. 11. G. Korsla.ke, of Palmerston North, relumed to New Zealand on Wednesday, after a two-years' tour of the globe. Mr. Kerslake was formerly subeditor of tho "Evening Standard" at Palmerston North.

Tho Rot. Monsignor Gillau, of St. Uswdiet's Church, Auckland, returned from a visit to America by tho Manuka yesterday. Sir. James Eman Smith'a appointment as Mcrctary for the Cook Islands is gazetted this week. Mr. Horschilz, representing tho Belgian Government, who has been touring New Zealand on agricultural matters, is returning to Sydney by tho Moana today. Tho Wnngamii Borough Council last night appointed Mr. C. N. Stavelev, of Utristehurch, to tho position of borough engineer.—l'ress Association. Among tho passengers from San Francisco by tho Manuka yesterday was Mr. llieodore Williams Noves, editor and partproprietor of tho "Washington Star." published at Washington, D.C., U.S.A. M.r. Aoyes informed our representative that Jims was the third year 111 succession that 10 had taken trips into tho south zone, out it was the first occasion he had crossed the Southern Pacific. Last year he had visited the Panama Canal, and from thero had journeyed down tho west coast of South America, crossed the Continent by the Transandine Railway to Buenos Ajr-res and Monte Video, and had returned north by the east coast. The year before he had visited Africa, sojourning at Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg, and tho Victoria Falls. This year ho fancied ho would like to take a glimpse at Now Zealand and Australia to gather a little nrst-hand knowledge of these much-dis-ousscd oouutries. Mr. Koycs, who goes north to-day to Rotorua and Auckland, was introduced to the Primo Minister (the Hon. W. F. Massey), and was an interested spectator in tho House last evening.
