Vice-TCegal. Lady Islington lias been advised by cable of the death of her lather, Mi'. Henry Dundas (who married the Hon, Catherine Napier, daughter of Lord Napier, of Magdala). Tho deceased gentleman was the son of the Into Mr. James Dundas, of Dundas, and Lady Marv Dundas (daughter of the first Lord Camperdown). On account of (ho death of her father her Excellency's immediato engagements have been cancelled. His Excellency the Governor, who left for Christchurch oil Monday evening to attend tlio Grand National Meeting, will return on Friday morning. Lady Islington left for "Ilighden" (Palmerston ■North) yesterday, and will return to town ou Monday next.

Walter Hobhouse, Chancellor and Canon of Birmingham Cathedral, who has accepted it. Chancellor Hobhouse is the second son of the late Bishop Hsbliouse, first Bishop of Nelson, New .Zealand. Ho was educated at Eton, whero he was Newcastle Scholar, and proceeded to New College, Oxford, wliero lie had n brilliant career. He was ordained in 1890, and from • 1891 to 1899 was hoadinaster of Durham School. From 1900 to 1905 hov-w.as. editor of "The Guardian,", and in tho latter year accepted'the ihvi-' tation of the present Bishop of Oxford to undertake honorary work in the newlycoiistituted Diocese of Birmingham. Ho became examining cbaplaii. to Dr. Gore, who also made him Honorary Canon and ChnpcoKor of Birmingham Cathedral. He was Bampton Lecturer in 1909, his subject being "'The Church and the World in Idea and in History." His work at Birmingham has been greatly appreciated, and the appointment has been received with genera! satisfaction.
